San Cristobal or possibly Ulawa Island, Solomon Islands 19th Century Wood Length: 31 cm. Provenance: Kevin Conru, Brussels, Belgium. This small somewhat rare spirit figure comes from the Eastern Solomon Islands, possibly San Cristobal or Ulawa. They can represent any number of ghosts and spirits. There are household ghosts of departed ancestors, kept in relic boxes in the corners of dwelling houses. Woodland ghosts, representing more malevolent spirit forces. Or sea spirits from the realm of warfare, headhunting and fishing. This old 19th Century example could be any one of these. The dark encrusted surface suggests years of life in the rafters of a house. | |||||||||||
